Dean S. James Anaya of the University of Colorado Law School will lead a virtual lecture on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on September 25, 2020, from 6 – 7:30 PM MDT.
Hosted by the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, the event is described as follows:
“In his lecture Dean Anaya will explain the legal status of the declaration, the United States’ official posture toward it, and its potential relation to decision making by political and judicial actors in the country. He will argue that the declaration signals international legal and policy prescriptions that should influence decision making by the federal courts and the political branches of government on matters concerning indigenous or Indian nations. In this way, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples can be a vehicle for significant, needed reform of United States law and policy on the rights and status of the country’s first peoples.”
Dean Anaya served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples from 2008 to 2014 and is the recipient of this year’s Cox Price Human Rights Award from the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Denver. Dean Anaya also works closely with the University of Colorado’s American Indian Law Program and CU-NARF Joint Project to Implement the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
