TIP Co-Directors Kristen Carpenter and Sue Noe make interventions at the EMRIP session in 2024.

The Implementation Project is preparing to participate in the upcoming Annual Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), which will take place at the United Nations Palais des Nations in Geneva from July 14 to 18, 2025.

The EMRIP provides expert advice to the UN Human Rights Council and supports Member States, Indigenous Peoples, and others in implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by conducting studies, accepting country engagements, and recommending measures to protect Indigenous Peoples’ rights. By virtue of its 2007 mandate from the Human Rights Council, revised in 2016, the EMRIP consists of seven independent experts and holds annual sessions involving representatives from States, Indigenous Peoples, academia, Indigenous and intergovernmental organizations to discuss human rights issues.

American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians have been active in EMRIP since its inception. For those interested in the 2025 session, details can be found on the UN Human Rights Council website, including the provisional agenda and program of work, and information about signing up for the list of speakers. Key topics for this year’s session include (1) Updates on recent country engagements, (2) Indigenous Peoples’ rights to data, including data collection and disaggregation, (3) Rights of Indigenous Peoples to their traditional economies, and (4) Indigenous Peoples’ enhanced participation in the UN.

Registration to participate is open from April 1 until July 4, 2025, through the Indico online platform, and requires an Accreditation Letter of nomination from your organization/body/entity explaining briefly how participating in the EMRIP may benefit the work of the organization/body/entity. Please read the Registration Instructions for more information about the Accreditation Letter and registering to participate. A confirmation of registration is provided once your registration is approved. Applicants in need of a letter to support their visa application should get it from the organization sponsoring their travel and accommodation.

For questions on registration, EMRIP can be contacted at ohchr-expertmechanism@un.org. TIP is also willing and able to provide as much support as possible, and can be contacted at declaration@narf.org
